I"M SO HUMILIATED, I COULD JUST SCREAM!!!

The Rogue Speaks:
*
We are the laughing stock of the nation! By we, I mean Arizona! When we moved to Tucson in 1998, we were happy to get out of the humid south--away from the bugs and mosquitoes, away from tornadoes and ice storms that wreaked havoc, and destroyed property on a regular basis. But those were acts of nature, something over which we have no control.
*
What has happened in the last week in Arizona was strictly man-made. And these men (and women) who have done more damage than the Mt. Lemmon fire, just who the hell do they think they are? How did they get in a position of such power that they can bring down an entire state with one bill?
*
7000 people marched in Tucson yesterday, protesting bill 1070. Even the police are against this idiocy. They are saying that it will make it difficult to do their jobs effectively, bringing down the murderers, thieves, drug dealers, etc. In contrast, only 40 people marched in support of the legislators.
*
O.k, so they round up ALL the people who are here illegally, and send them back to their country of origin. So just who will pick the Pima cotton, and the vegetables, and fruit? Who will do the jobs that the "real Americans" don't want? Maybe the legislators can do it in their spare time. Actually, if I have my way, those morons will have all the time in the world come the next election.
*
The cost of many of our goods and services is going to go sky-high. We won't be able to afford any fresh produce. Oh, I know! We are a global economy now! We'll just import our lettuce from China!! Or Mexico! Hmm, well maybe not Mexico. The Mexican government is so mad at Arizona that they are locking the door, and posting a sign, "Keep Out! This Means You!" or " No Gringos Allowed!"
*
Already the economic damage of this shameful act of stupidity is being felt. The Arizona Inn, a Tucson landmark, is reporting record cancellations this week. I expect to hear about more economic loss in the coming weeks. The country has been in an economic crisis for a while now. Just how much more can we take?
*
I wish I could just shut out all this ugliness and concentrate on my creative spirit, which has flourished since we moved here. How can this be? How can one area of the country, overflowing with such beautiful vistas, an art mecca for so many artists seeking to create, just how can it also contain such narrow-minded, illiterate, arrogant people? String 'um up, I say! If we are going to revert to the old west here, back to the past, let's just find us a hanging tree, and make an example of these mean little people. That'll teach 'um!
*
Despite my developing agoraphobia, I am thinking that it may be a good thing that we will be gone for almost a month. NOLA will look like the city of my dreams, and the south in general will appear ultramodern and futuristic in comparison to Arizona. And maybe by the time I get home, this will all be over. You think?
*
I have a headache. I'm going back to bed.
*
O.k., it is now 7:00 p.m. on Sunday. I stayed away from all the Sunday morning news programs, watched golf for most of the day IN MY PAJAMAS, made a nice dinner, and then sat down to watch Conan O'Brien trash Jay Leno on 60 Minutes.
*
Of course the first segment just had to be about illegal immigration. There is a muddy grave yard in California where over 500 immigrants are buried, having died trying to cross "The All American Canal" trying to make a better life for themselves and their families. The graves are marked with names and numbers--John Doe # blah, blah, blah. Do you actually know any Mexicans called JOHN? Of course you don't! Would it have been too much trouble to mark those graves as "Juan Cierva"????
*
The second segment was about a Spanish chef, Jose Andres, who came to America to try and create "A Circus in Your Mouth." O.k., so much for the dead Mexicans, let's eat!
*
The last segment was about Conan trashing Jay. Who gives a rusty f***??
*
I am going to bed, and I don't even have to change my clothes first.

You are so right. We can only hope the citizens of Arizona are smart enough to get rid of the idiot governor and legislators when election time rolls around. Perhaps something can then be done to repair the mess they have made.

Thanks, Cherrie! And now I am going to post your comment about Diane's bio in A Secret Life.

I think many people in the country are shocked about this bill, even some people who might have initially supported it.
People should be enacting laws for the good of the people, not because they harbor deep seeded hate for people that are different from them.
I realize that immigration is a huge issue, but this is not a solution. This only makes things worse.
Maybe a month break will do you some good. When do you leave?

We are leaving next Saturday. First we are going to NOLA to spend some time with Beth, and then we are heading to Atlanta to be with Mum. We talked with her tonight, and it was a struggle. She can't hear, and she doesn't understand. All she knows is that we are coming, and she is happy about that.
I am dead serious about agoraphobia, but I really think it will be good for us to get away from here for a while.
Instead of watching the NBC Nightly News tonight, I opted for a re-run of Two and A Half Men. That is how embarrassed I am.

It's very easy to fix if she really wanted to fix it. Just crack down on the companies that hire illegals and issue work permit to farmers and set yearly quotas. But she's afraid to offend businesses, so she went with this round about way to waste tax payers' money and accomplished nothing.

I saw the same program. I'm still shocked at the canal grave site. What about all those manufacturers and industries that went to Mexico? How come it didn't help their economy at all? Shouldn't their government take responsibilities?

Judie said...

It sounds easy, doesn't it? Well, these people don't think "easy." There have been some pretty outlandish and harmful bills to come out of this legislature this year. This is jus tthe latest and most critical. All of their hairbrained schemes are hurting the taxpayer, but this is the worst.

The maquiladoros are there for the cheap labor.
They are just another form of outsourcing.
Mexico has never had a strong leader who actually tried to help his people.

You forgot the part about going to visit your grandchildren. However, you might not want to hear Emaline's take on the Arizona law.

Joann Mannix said...

I have been shocked over this, Judie, simply shocked. My town, too, is full of, what I am sure are illegals. They migrate here because our produce fields are overflowing year round. And yes, who else will do that awful, hard labor. The Mexicans here are hard-working, good people. They work for ridiculous wages because someone is always willing to take advantage of their illegal status and they are desperately poor. My daughter volunteers at the San Jose MIssion, a beautiful residential community that houses migrant workers, provides them with health care and helps school their children. My girl helps with the children. Every two weeks, we bring in hot lunches, provided by volunteering families. This past week it was lasagna. We set up out in the picnic area and the children come out in droves to eat. As word gets out, their families come out of their homes and stand on the edges, never, ever trying to assert themselves. They only come forward when we invite them. And they are all, so very hungry. Most of them go all day, picking in the fields without strong sustenance.

I will not boycott your state. Hate only births more hate. You good folk did not do this, your dumbass power hungry legislators did. And I am certain from the outcry, those legislators will not be in power for too much longer.

And I would have loved to have seen Conan. Go CoCo!

Judie said...

Joey, Emaline has already given me her take, and I quote: "Mamamama, dadadadada, mamamama, dadadada."

Joann, for years and years the immigration issue was all but ignored. The government turned a blind eye because many members employed illegal immigrants in their homes and paid them pathetic wages. My guess is that they probably still do.

What your daughter does speaks volumes as to how she is being raised. You are blessed, and I am blessed to know you.

Can empathize with the shame you feel. I felt embarrassed to be an American after Bush attacked Iraq. Thought about wearing a Canadian flag pin when I traveled abroad. Didn't need to. People were great. Everyone said they liked Americans, they just didn't like the US govt.

Judie said...

Ginny, thanks for the support. I felt the same way after Bush attacked Iraq.

If you have read any of my other posts, you know it is out of character for me to go off like this. I think this thing has been festering in my brain for a while, and it finally just erupted.

Several years ago, a suburb here in the area did a similar thing. They passed a city law that was very controversial regarding immigrants. It was a BIG deal and they had to end up back tracking on it. My grandparents were all immigrants that came to this country for a better life. Most Americans have the same heritage.

I don't watch the news very often so I certainly don't see the crazy news they show nowadays. I do know it's more about sensationalizing than actual reporting.

Hang in there and enjoy your month in NOLA!

Judie said...

Thanks, Angelia. I think I really do need a break.

Sad that Arizona, my favorite place in the world, disgraced themselves this way. (The mere mention of Mt. Lemmon sent me in a nostalgic tailspin.) All this law will result in is a bunch of meaningless arrests. The flow of people over the border will continue (no law or wall will keep hungry people out) and the whole business will have been a lot of sound and fury, signifying nothing. Meanwhile, as you point out, the State has hurt itself financially and spiritually and made a mockery of itself.

Have a wonderful trip and visit with your daughter. By the way, there is no book. Kimmy is always teasing me about writing one, but I'm too lazy to even think about it.

Judie said...

Marty, you will be glad to know that Mt. Lemmon has come back beautifully. The only sad thing is that the pie lady died. I don't know if her family has the restaurant open or not. We haven't been up there in a while.

Too bad about the book! I could sell a lot of them here. After last week, the folks in AZ need something good to look forward to.

I will have one more post before we leave, and I will be checking your blog every chance I get on the road.

What a thoughtful thing to do! Thank you! I'll bring you two Varsity hotdogs all the way from Hotlanta. Hmmm--I'd better not promise that. They are just too good to resist!

Keep our table warm for us! And give yourself a hug for being so nice to two aging artists.

You cute thing! Of course you can be my amigo!Actually when I answer the phone, it is always with "Bueno!" Sometimes people think they have the wrong number, but most everyone just laughs.

You sure know how to warm an old woman's heart! Hey! When you gave me the good stuff today, did you have an ulterior motive???? Just kidding!

All right, Tommy Boy and Judie, you two had better settle down before I have to throw a bucket of cold water on you...or maybe a pitcher of cold Margaritas!

I thought I'd catch you before you left. Hope all is well. Have an awesome trip. We'll miss you. Are you taking a month long computer break, or just a change of venue?

Judie-the same dishes for 25 years? My mother had a set like that-trouble is no ever eat off them. Poor dishes eventually died of heartbreak. Have a great trip. I appreciate all the comments and, even more, the new friendship.

nothingprofound said...

Should be-no ONE ever ate off them. Sorry!

Judie said...

Thanks, Marty. If my dishes could talk! Hmmm, it's probably a good thing that they can't. On the other hand, they are home free now, and happy.
I will be checking in with you when I have computer time. I am posting my trip blog this afternoon.
Thanks for the compliment--I feel the same way.
