DRY HEAT, MY ASS!!

The Rogue Speaks:
*
We are going to watch fireworks at a friend's house tonight, and everyone is bringing a dish to share. I am bringing Southern style potato salad. I never make potato salad because it is one of my weaknesses. It is also loaded with fat and carbs, neither of which I need.
*
It has been wicked hot here--as high as 110 in some areas of Tucson. I don't check the thermometer when it gets really hot. I have my own internal system for gauging the heat. It is called my brain. When it gets REALLY hot, I go into a stupor. I see things that aren't really there. Not stuff like heat on a black top that looks like water, a mirage. I see objects for something other than they really are.
*
Today is one of those days when my brain gauge is on. I forgot a couple of items I needed for the potato salad, so I went to the store. As I was pulling into the street, I noticed something in my front yard that I had never seen before. It looked like a lawn statue of a green heron. I thought Rod had bought it for me to apologize for acting like a stereotypical man. I did a double-take, and realized that it only LOOKED like a lawn statue.
*
What I thought was a bronze statue of a Great Desert Heron (the black lines, I added to make my point.) was actually some rabbit-ear cactus that had grown up over the spring.
Currently, my head is wrapped in an icy towel, in an attempt to cool my fevered brow before we go to the party tonight. I don't want to appear as half-witted as I actually feel.

Okay, THAT is friggin' HOT. I will never complain about the Texas level Orange heat again!

I bet a Heron statue would be very cute. :-)

I hope you had a grand time in spite of the heat. It was wretchedly hot in Pittsburgh last night as well. It attracted pesky mosquitoes put quickly out of my misery by my handy can of spray. That can must have been passed around to twenty people in my vicinity. Each wanted to hand me beer in return. I could have been looped, but turned down the beer with a smile. :)

Okay, another example of why we shouldn't mix alcohol with hot weather... :)

I know that potato salad is full of naughty things, but how about a recipe - what makes it Southern?

There is an award for you at my blog.

Our crazy neighbor down the street (nice crazy!) has a statue of a bull in his yard--almost life-size and made of metal. Someone stole the first one he had, so he replaced it. My dinky little heron, if I had one, would disappear, I am sure! Stay cool, Angelia!!

Cher, we didn't have mosquitos, but we did have some shiny little black bugs that no one had ever seen before. They were annoying, but they didn't bite! I would have turned down the beer, also! Had it been vodka, though...

Sara, actually you are right about the heat and alcohol. It is a deadly combo. A lot of my friends like a drink after golf. That doesn't work for me, though. I have to drive my cart home from the club, and I am not sure I would make it, so I decline. I save that margarita for a more reasonable hour.

Chris, I think it is called Southern potato salad because it came out of my very old Southern Living Cook Book. It is just your basic recipe with the addition of crumbled bacon, and chopped stuffed olives.

An award? Pour moi?? Thank you, Chris!! I'll check it out right now!!

Good luck with the heat!

We had a nice fourth, but no fireworks. My boys hate the loud sounds. What??!! That's all they do all day long!

I'm off for a few days starting tomorrow. Be back later in the week. Thanks for the great review on itunes!!

Thanks, Sae! The boys don't think of their sounds as being loud!

It was very quiet in our neighborhood--no firecrackers or cherry bombs. I was relieved because we left the dogs alone while we went to a party.

Have a nice break! I'm really enjoying your podcasts.
