Henry, But Which One?

The Rogue Speaks:

We all know about Henry David Thoreau, and his fondness for civil disobedience. Were he alive today, he would no doubt have much to say on the subject of today's politics! Thoreau was born in 1817, and in his lifetime, he was a poet, an abolitionist, a naturalist, a tax resister, a development critic, a surveyor, an historian, a philosopher, and a transcendentalist. WHEW!! That guy was sure busy!! He died in 1862, so he never saw television, the internet, a jet plane, an automobile, and all the other fancy gadgets we have! I wonder what he would think of our world today? And just what political party would he vote for??

I could write a lot more about him, but he's not the Henry I had in mind for today's Alphabe-Thursday. My eighth grade sweetheart's name is Henry--Henry Strozier. Here we are at age 14, at Alatoona Lake just outside Atlanta.

Henry wanted to be an actor for as long as I can remember, and that's what he became! He's been in many motion pictures over the years, and has had parts in many night-time t.v. dramas. He was a stage actor for a long time before he went into films.

Henry is retired, now, but he still finds time to do a little work for Ocean Spray!

He's not really the Henry I had in mind for my post, but I thought I would throw him into the mix anyway.

Finally, we come to good old Henry VIII! You know--the one who had 6 wives! Henry reigned from 1509 to 1547. He was the son of Henry VII and Elizabeth of York, and was a pretty intelligent fellow. He wrote books and music, played several musical instruments, and was a patron of the arts.

When his father died, Henry inherited a very wealthy and stable realm. Henry had married his brother's widow, Catherine of Aragon, in 1509. They only had one child, Princess Mary. Mary was born in 1516. Catherine was in her forties and Henry was desperate for a son.

Henry fell in love with Anne Bolyn, the sister of one of his many mistresses. He wanted to divorce his wife and marry Anne, but the Pope at that time would have none of it. He had already granted Henry a license to marry his sister-in-law, and he thought enough was enough.

Henry was determined to have his own way--after all, he was the KING. So he dumped the Catholic Church and England became Protestant. So Henry married Anne, who also failed to produce a male heir--just another daughter. Henry accused Anne of treason and had her head cut off.

Henry's third wife, Jane Seymour, finally gave Henry what he wanted most--a son!! It literally killed her, though. She died 12 days after the boy (who would later become Edward VI)was born.

Henry married two more women, Katherine Howard whom he had executed on the grounds of adultery, and Catherine Parr. Catherine Parr outlived the overweight, irascible Henry, who died in 1547.

So, tell me, just which Henry do you think is the most interesting?

Oh!! I almost forgot!! If you want to hear the music I chose to go with this post, you'll have to scroll down to my playlist and click the big triangle. I haven't had a chance to put it back on auto-play.

The most interesting??? The first love turned actor, of course.

Incidentally, did you see Chief Leatherlips was at it again? The final round of the Memorial Tournament was suspended for a few hours due to lightening in the Dublin area. Coincidence? I think not!

Hahaha! La, I thought about you when that happened! Thanks for the nice comment!!

Very interesting post. Now I can say I've read that guy's old girlfriend's blog whenever that Ocean Spray commercial runs. That Henry VIII didn't have much patience did he?

Hi Judy,
WOW, I've seen that commercial! How exciting! And even more exciting that you have a pic of you two when you were kids...how amazing is that?

I personally found your second Henry the most interesting! Not that the other two aren't great Henrys, but I already knew about them. So cool you had such a famous boyfriend.

Ahhhh - I love your picture, holding hands with the actor-to-be. I see him many evenings in that field of cranberries!

I think I prefer your sweetheart Henry - you're a cute couple.

Excellent H post! I'm fond of YOUR Henry's character in the cranberry bog. I have three Henrys: my dad, my youngest brother and my next door neighbor.

I think that your next assignment should be to write a short play, where all three Henry guys meet up. It could take place in an art museum. Just a thought.

I like the cranberry bog Henry. So cute that he was your sweetie in the summer of 55:-)

Wow, 3 Henry's in one post! That's a lot of learning! I think that your sweetheart Henry was most interesting especially since he actually became an actor :) Then again, Henry the VIII is always interesting because, in my opinion, he was a bit crazy with power and the way his private life played out seems almost like soap opera drama. Henry David Thoreau was pretty interesting too since I only know the name but not much about the person. :)

I love the picture of the two you holding hands! Henry the cranberry guy not Henry the 8th!

FYI, Henry, the actor, and I still keep in touch, even after all these years! I'm lucky to have such good friends!

It's good for everyone to have a Henry or two in their life! Why who wouldn't want to sing...I'm Henry the 8th I am, I am...but out of all your Henry characters...I love your sweetheart...he was so cute...love the sweet hand holding too...for a picture even! I know that commercial too, and I will think of that happy boy on the beach every time I see it now! Thanks...cuz I really don't want lots of commericals but that one has always caught my eye! What an absolute cool post! THANKS Judie!

Judy, what a charming post, with such an array of Henrys to choose from. I love David Thoreau and Henry VIII not so much, but my favorite of course is no. 2 because he's your Henry.

I liked ALL of your Henrys!

=)

PS. Playlist.com doesn't offer autostart anymore. I had to change to grooveshark.com. They have a better music selection, anyway...

We probably know too much about Henry the VIII, and very familiar with Henry the writer, so I would say your Henry is the most interesting one. Next time I'll pay more attention to the commercial.

I like Henry Strozier the best. He aspired to be an actor and never gave up.
Cute pic of the two of you!~Ames

My favorite Henry is the old flame that is the actor in the Oceanspray commercial, he is a hoot. What is really unusual about your post is: 1. I have been to Walden's pond 2. I live near Altoona Lake 3. I love those Oceanspray commercials 4. I am a Henry IIIV nut! Great minds think alike! HAve a wonderful weekend and I LOVED this post!

My vote is for Strozier. Henry VIII was a murdering womanizer. Thoreau started out a hero, but caved in when he was threatened with prison. His romantic writings do remain favorites of mine, but they're not as good as cranberries.

oooh! I love this post, cuz you shared that sweet photo of you and your Henry :o) I was pretty excited when you first told me about your Henry! (Immediately after you had mentioned that, I told my hubby and then txt all our kids). Truly, those Cranberry commercials are some of our favorites in our home! haha

Thanks for "...throwing him in the mix"! :o)

Blessings & Aloha!
Thank you soooo much for stopping by my neck of the woods :o)

The most interesting is definitely the first-love turned actor! I love his work on the Ocean Spray commercials. He's hilarious!

You and Henry look so cute in that picture. :)

If Thoreau would live these days I strongly doubt he would get half as much done as he did back then.

I'm voting for this Henry:

"All endeavor calls for the ability to tramp the last mile, shape the last plan, endure the last hours toil. The fight to the finish spirit is the one... characteristic we must posses if we are to face the future as finishers."
~Henry David Thoreau

Love it - and thanks for your lovely comment on my Saturday Centus this morning!

Namaste..........cj

Well, Readers, I heard from Henry this morning, and he wanted me to tell you that he is only semi-retired. He loves his craft way too much to ever actually give it up for umbrella and a cold beer on the beach. When one is an artist, the Muses are disinclined to ever let one go completely!

CJ, thanks for your quote and comment. Did you by any chance read JJ's comment? If not, scroll up and check it out!!

I think my favorite Henry in this post is your first love! He is awesome in those commercials. I have a little crush on him, but please don't tell Mr. Jenny!

Thanks for a smile Miss Judy. I hope you're set with free cranberry juice for life!

You are always just a joy to visit each week.

A+

Very cute photo of you holding hands with your beau!! I'd say you've just proven that all Henries are destined to be interesting.

Love this post. There's a great TV series called The Tudors. It's about Henry and very interesting bit of history - also has stunning costumes and sets. Thoreau was someone we had to study in school - interesting guy. But my fave Henry in your post is your boyfriend. Love the picture of you two together holding hands - there's not much sweeter than young love. I too will be watching for him on TV. How neat that he fulfilled his childhood dream.

Hey you guys who spelled my name with a "Y"!! It's "IE"!! After all this time, you should know!!!!!

I've been interested in Henry VIII since I was pretty young. I loved reading The Other Boleyn Girl by Philippa Gregory. I felt like I was there--at court!
Your beau at 14 turned out to be famous! How cool! He had a dream and got to live it! And you knew him when!
Thoreau is always of interest.

For this post, Henry Strozier wins! Now I just have to go google him!

I love your takes on royal Henry and naturalist Henry. I especially love that sweet photo. Most people have fantasies about vineyards and olive groves, but I never met someone with a thing for cranberry bogs. I have a special Henry in my life. He recently died, but I hold him quite dear. He was an incredible violinist, and a survivor of the holocaust camps. I never knew a stronger, more passionate person. It's always a pleasure to read your blog, Judie.
