I is for Ipso Facto

The Rogue Speaks:

Ipso Facto is a phrase in Latin that means "by the fact itself." In other words, when you do something stupid like WeinerMan did, the effect is a direct consequence of his blatant narcissism and stupidity in posting the famous photo of his "manhood" on the internet. This loser has only been married to his beautiful wife for about a year. What was he thinking!!!!

Baron Acton (1834 - 1902) was the historian and moralist who wrote, in a letter to Bishop Mandell Creighton in 1887, "power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely."

Of course, one does not have to be powerful to engage in acts of greed, stupidity, and infidelity. Men living in or on the edge of poverty often commit moral improprieties in an attempt to shore up their manhood. Those men are rarely in the public eye, however, and it is only the politicians for whom we have cast our votes, whose acts of narcissism or greed quickly become fodder for the ever-present press.

I have read that the two most powerful forces in the lives of many men are sex and money. Maybe that's why there are always a number of scandals in our government involving one or both of those two things, and it has always been that way since the beginning of time.

Poor Kind David, God's favorite, just couldn't keep his hands off Bathsheba, and even had her husband killed so he could have her all to himself. God was not happy about that,so ipso facto He caused David's little son to die.

King Midas loved gold so much that he wished for "the golden touch" and his wish was answered. Everything he touched turned to pure, solid gold. His greed was as strong as his love for his little daughter. After he received "The Midas Touch" he went running around touching everything in sight-- books, furniture, trees, flowers. He was blinded by his desire for gold. During his wild spree, his little daughter came running to him and he hugged her, and ipso facto she turned into a block of hard cold gold. He was brokenhearted, and wanted his warm, loving little daughter back, but unfortunately, it was too late.

Because sex and greed are so much easier for the common man to comprehend, the latest political sex scandal has taken their attention away from far more pertinent issues facing the American public today. Here comes Ipso Facto again! What do you think the result of this focus has produced?

The following is a list of politicians who have been in the news in the last several years. What effect have these men had on your voting record?

Mark Foley
Larry Craig
Mark Sanford
John Edwards
Bill Clinton
"The Terminator"
Vito Fossella
Chris Lee
Eric Massa
Newt Gingrich
Gary Hart
Elliot Spitzer
John Ensign
Chris Massa

This is just a sprinkling of names in the long list of politicians who have disgraced themselves in the last ten years, and a good number of these have been sexual indiscretions. The list of politicians who have been in the game purely for greed is equally long.

The Latin words Ipso Facto are words that we need to remember and contemplate in our ever-changing world today. Do you think Latin is a "dead language"? Think again!!

I was determined to get this Alphabe-Thursday post out today, because I am going "under the knife" tomorrow for cataract surgery, and I don't really know just what the outcome will be. I hope that you will go to Jenny's blog and read the other offerings, because they will probably be a lot more interesting than mine!!

Judie posted, Ipso Facto I was compelled to read :) I liked this quite a bit, although it is depressing to think of all the politicians who've been disgraced over the years. Hope your surgery goes well! Kat

You know, I never have known till now what ipso facto meant, so thanks for clearing that up! Sending good thoughts for tomorrow!

Good luck with the eye surgery! I'll be thinking of you.
I was thinking today, that there is little to be done about a bit player like Wiener, when the sitting President lied, cheated and looked the country straight in the eye - and went on to honour and glory and the high-priced speaking circuit.

This was a really good, interesting post, Judie. I'd heard that term but didn't know its meaning. So, thank you! And, my goodness, I had no idea Weiner's wife was so gorgeous. It seems they (the ones betrayed) always are.

I'm sending good thoughts for your surgery tomorrow.
Keep faith.

Good luck to your surgery, Judie, and wish you to recover quickly.

The whole scandal is disturbing, and I couldn't believe a man that age acted so stupid. I agree with others that he should just quit so the focus could be on more of an important matter.

I came, I read, and ipso facto was amused and informed. Good one, Judie! Don't get me started on the issue of sex and money and corruption, though. We'd need a long evening and a bottle of good red. If you're reading this, then your cataract surgery went brilliantly.

Very interesting!!! Good luck on your surgery!

This post was BRILLIANT! Weinerman was and is a douche. I hope that characterization doesn't offend you.

That list, comprehensive it is, did not
affect my voting record. The only one I voted for was Bill Clinton. His behavior was douche-y too. :)

Best of luck on your surgery.

I'm afraid power does corrupt. That's why we need governments that change every few years... to give corruption equal opportunity (only kidding about that last part).

Hope you heal quickly!

I am often reminded of the quote from the Rolling Stones. "People ask who killed the Kennedy's, when after all it was you and me." As long as we continue to gobble up the junk (greed and sex) the media will continue to fee it to us.In the bible it says what we put into our bodies hearts and minds is what will come out of them. So when I see this stuff on the news I turn my back on it.I choose not to have be involved in my life.

Oh and I forgot to say that I will include you in my prayers for tomorrow. Praying that all will go well with your surgery. My mother had it done and she has never regretted it. She recovered very quickly and had no problems.

Good luck with your surgery, Judie. I'll be thinking of you and sending some prayers heavenward. (I have a cataract developing in my left eye, but it's early days yet.)

This post was a timely one, and I think it is distressing how many men in public office have behaved badly. I wish they would all get a clue and maintain some dignity.

I hope the cataract surgery went well. My mom just had it last year and she loves her new eyesight.

And you're so right about men. I'm not trying to knock men here, but I truly think they are less meditative, more impulsive than women. What you see is what you get with a man whereas with a woman, there is layer upon layer. And part of that basic makeup that is a man is that he is driven by his penis. Once again, this is not meant to be a slam. I just really believe men are ruled by inherent instinct. Couple that with egos that are stroked constantly when a man becomes a celebrity and voila, you have this constant phenomena known as the man f**ck up.

You are welcome for my theory.

Hope you're feeling better!

P.S. My verification was ballses. Pretty ironic.

Judie said...

Joann, I have have dubbed that phenomenon as "The Peen Gene."

Your verification was very apropos!!!

TAKE THAT, STEELBEAM!!!

Good luck with the surgery! I'm sure there won't be any problems... they should be pretty good at it... cataract surgery has been around for quite a while. I know you'll be back to eyeballin' the Southwestern beefcake in no time.

I heard that after the surgery your vision will be 20-20. Let me know if that's true!

Have a great surgery tomorrow - may all work out properly. I'll miss your posts while you're recovering. This was a great one. Whenever I hear of the indiscretions of politicos I wonder what the heck? Are they really willing to give up their comfortable lives and toss their families away for a few months or years of illicit sex or financial gain. I guess so since it happens over and over. These guys just don't learn - I'm truly puzzled.

I hope your cataract surgery went well--I'm sure it did! After my parents had theirs done, they couldn't get over how great their eyesight became!

Great post on rascally politicians. I honestly think Weiner's were relative minor compared to others, but I was pretty angry at him nevertheless. I really liked him until his narcissism got in the way!

Jenny said...

Judy, I didn't know the meaning of this word. I share your disgust in the total lack of respect and honor in the world of politicians.

It makes me sad that our world has come to this.

It makes me happy, though, to come and learn something new from you every week.

Thanks for being you! You are amazing.

A+

Hope you love seeing the world again. My dad had it done a year ago and loves that he did. As for the Weiner dude, he is one. The rest of them should have their careers Terminated along with the obnoxious one who claims the title...

I absolutely love this post! It speaks so much truth and is very well written :) I'm so very blessed that the man I married is not driven by sex or greed. That makes him so much more precious to me that he's such a good man :)

Good luck with your surgery!
