Whimsical Wednesday - Gecko on Barrel Cactus

The Rogue Speaks:

I have worked with gourds for several years, and find them to be a very interesting base for whimsical pieces. This piece took many hours to cut and paint, but I was very happy with the results. It never occurred to me that in this arid climate, the gourd would continue to dry out, distorting the cut-out to the point where it no longer fits snugly on the base. I never intend to sell this piece, however, and it sits among my collection of carved Oxacan figures that I have collected over the years.

Not all the gourds I carve are whimsical. Below is a carved piece that contains copper and jade.

I wish I could settle on ONE medium on which to concentrate, but I just can't! Art is so much fun, don't you think??

Please visit the other offerings at dt haase's Whimsical Wednesday. Whimsy comes to us in so many forms!!!

Oh Judie this is cool, and it's given me some Halloween ideas for later. I planted some Dragon gourds that's I'm excited about...the plant is growing but not so sure yet what will be the end result...it may get in a post! This is an awesome whimsical piece, very nicely done! thanks for the song too!

oh why settle on one medium ... wouldn't that be like walking up to a buffet created by the magic of faeries and only choosing the carrot sticks ... just create, create, create!!!!
i do love both of your pieces!!!

GRRR....I wrote something, pushed 'post comment' and headed back to mine, realizing too late that I have to do the $%#@& word veri crap thingy!!! Sorry Judie, not everyone has that anymore and I'm not use to it....I'll try again in the morning. Let's see if I remember to w.a.i.t.....

This is pretty cool! So I imagine you hollow out the gourd and dry it out first before painting on them? I'm just wondering since you mentioned the gourd continued to distort. I do love that second one! I could hardly tell that it was once a gourd :)

The gourd with the copper and jade is stunning!!! I also like the gecko. it is difficult to settle on one medium. During our rainy winters when I'm somewhat housebound I make jewelry, pottery and collage. Fun!

Incredible! You are such a talent. I love the first one, it really pops. But the second is very pleasing to the eye. I wish I could do stuff like this!

Hiya, found you through Web of Whimsy and your lovely comment on my page! Thank you so much-- I'm thrilled to find your blog! Such great stuff, and your carving work is amazing. Both are beautiful, although the Gecko is my favorite. Great shapes, colors, and character design on that little guy (-: Nice to meet you and keep up your wonderful works! I've got to go look through all of the wondrous and whimsical stuff on @DTHasse's great monthly challenge.
