Let's Play "Gossip"

The Rogue Speaks:

“Nadine! Don’t you know this girl?”

My daughter stood transfixed, her eyes wide in amazement. The newscaster announced that a popular teen had been found hanging in her closet, dead.

Nadine’s eyes filled with tears. “She was a cheerleader at my school. I didn’t know her personally. She was very popular, though.”

“Why did she do it, I wonder! Those poor parents! She was their only child!”

“Someone told a lie about her,” whispered Nadine.

“Who would do such a thing?

“It was me. I did it. I planted a little story seed.”

“Oh, Nadine!! Why?”

“I was jealous, “ she said, with shame and regret.

This is quite an interesting prompt that Jenny Matlock has given us for this Saturday Centus. Please read the other offerings. They are fascinating and varied!!

Oh my - this is such a sad thought.

My name is Riet said...

Oh my goodness, that is so sad.

So, so sad but this happens. If only we could show kids better ways, but adults do it too. Have you read 13 Reasons Why by Jay Asher...whole YA to this subject!

Unfortunately, this story is not unique these days.

oh, this just gave me chills because I know it happens far too often. Well captured with your words.

yes, this does happen all too much in schools doesn't it?
I liked your writing today!

Awww so sad because it is all too often so true. I hope this was fiction from you but, it still is true for real life.
great use of showing how dangerous and harmful our words can be.

A tragic story. And even more so, knowing that this actually happens.

Well done, my friend.

=)

It was definitely fiction! My children all knew better than to tell lies about someone!!!

Sounds very tragic especially since an 11-year-old boy recently committed suicide and was buried in Ottawa yesterday. He was being bullied online.

so many lost children ... and so many parents who refuse to believe that their children are bullies ....

Yes, it seems like everyday now we're learning about another teen who took his/her life. Kudos to you for writing about teen suicide Judie. We all need to do what we can to address the horrid epidemic. Your piece is very powerful and realistic.

Oh Judie this was perfect! I do like they way you took this! The poor jealous little girl shall be careful from here on out, in any future stories she dares to tell! Great way to go with! I just love the ever changing twists on these responses!

It has always existed, has become way too common now with the social networks available. Very well written and felt the shock and regret.

Dear Judie,
Your text really addresses the damage that gossip can do! Well done!

I had also thought about writing something about gossip (considering some problems that I have had with certain people who share the same laundry-room that I use.) but opted for this easier and kinder solution. (I was lazy yesterday, having written my text at midnight after the children fell asleep.)

Thank you so much visiting my post! you are first to comment and get an extra link back here.

Best wishes,
Anna

And so much easier to spread the lies with all the texting and social media- used for bad purposes. Very sad, but true.

I loved that you took this centus in an unexpected way for me. This was wonderfully written. If only people thought of the consequences before they talk about someone. Great job.

Just returned from vacation Judie and had to see what you were writing about! This was intense and as always, you left us wanting to know more. Well done, again!

Is it technology?
__or__
Is it that we were better able to handle being "bullied" as they call it now?
__Once, we were able to rely on our friends... face to face friends, thought to thought friends, friends that understood each other and supported each other.
__Now the lies and insults go world wide... and the friends are just
-key klicks-.

Judie, it breaks my heart every time I hear of a young person killing themselves. Teenagers can be so cruel, we can all be so cruel, with our thoughtless words and criticisms. How one wishes kindness and appreciation were the rule instead of mockery and meanness.

Hi!

Planning to answer recent query from Lizzie in the Lola Lifeline I'm posting tomorrow (Wednesday noon approx USA time). Would be great to illustrate answer with Lizzie's pic (from yr sidebar). If I don't hear to contrary in meantime, I'll take it this is OK!

btw such a thought-provoking post here...

You may certainly use Lizzie's photo! She is all recovered from her rattlesnake bite now, and had a wonderful time last night at the ladies' Halloween Bunco party! She is so little that we could not find a costume that fit her, so she went as her sweet little self and was the life of the party!!

This is such a sad story but at the same time so very common to hear these days. It just seems that kids this generation are really into bullying and hurting one another either verbally or physically. All this cruelty always ends with either the victim taking their own life or the life of their classmates. It's just so sad the way things are today....

Oh Judie. Disturbing and believable and, sadly, oh so true in todays society of mean girls and bullies.

Sometimes I think the internet should just crash and burn...not sure if I could stand blog withdrawal then, though.

Really excellent.
