Jenny's Cruel Prompt

The Rogue Speaks:

I hate to actually say it, but Jenny Matlock has a mean streak as wide as a skunk's stripe! She has really done it this time! She has brought us to our knees for this Saturday Centus. Oh, the humiliation! Grown-ups composing little songs about fall to the tune of Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star!!

Well, just suck it up, Centusians! Swallow your pride! We are all creative adults, and we can do this! In fact, I did a couple, neither of which I am particularly proud. But, what the heck! It's only one Saturday out of many, right?

I have hung back long enough, I guess. Please don't judge me too harshly.

Autumn Nights

In the autumn I am glad
Summer’s heat’s no longer bad.
Later comes the morning light!
Fall makes sleeping a delight!

The best news about autumn today is that Rod no longer has to sleep with one eye opened to make sure I don't sneak out of bed at night and turn the air conditioning down to "icy" so I can sleep without sticking to the sheets with sweat. No matter how quiet I am, 9 nights out of 10, he will hear me, and make an exaggerated sigh, indicating that the electric bill will be HUGE this month! Well, I don't care! Sleeping in comfort is extremely important to me!!!

That's it for today! Time to read all the other offerings!

The painting you see is by John William Godward (1861 - 1922)

Excellent Judie !
I'm right there with you my friend. We had stinkin' big electric bills the last 3 months...highest...$534.00 but I refuse to be hot and sticky to save a few bucks or conserve energy...lucky for me my Hubs is with us on it too !!!

Well done! I'm with you on the sleeping comfortably, too, though generally we just have to open windows - no need for a/c in UK most of the time;-)

Good morning Judie......Cute little diddy!!

I, too, have to have my room at zero when I sleep...it has gotten somewhat better over the years...but I still have the occasional "personal summer". LOL

Well done although you left us short when singing! It was really mean of her I think ;)

There's a picture prompt here if you fancy it! http://jfb57.wordpress.com/2011/09/12/100-word-challenge-for-grown-ups-week-10/

I think we have the same husband, or that they must be made of the same genetic code. Maybe twins separated at birth. Enjoyed your lyrical muse!

You're right, this one was hard to keep at 32 words to this song! LOL.

It has been great the last couple nights, nice and cool:@)

I think it's delightful. And I'm so happy for Rod!

That painting is of me passed out from a brain aneurysm after stretching my creativity to the very edge of the abyss of insanity.
I'm with ya on the a/c sista. Maybe Rod could use some Benadryl before he goes to bed. It will knock him out and you can drop that thermostat as low as you want! Hee hee!~Ames

Sounds like you and I have the same temperature requirements on summer nights.

Nice job!

I had to dish this meme awhile ago..sigh..but still love to see what others do with it. You are excellent at following along the skunk trail..mwahaha

Sleep tight:)

I love you, Judie, and this piece. I especially love the title.

I'm utterly clueless about autumn (I've lived in CA all my life, we don't know what autumn is. It's summer and earthquake season all year long), so this was not my favorite prompt.

you sound like my husband--he wants it horribly cold and all I can do is sleep under two quilts!

Really good one for all your cribbing.:)
A good night's sleep is worth the comfort.

You shouldn't have been so nervous, you did a great little version:-)

Judie! This is great! I so agree with Jenny's skunkitation this week, and your little ditty is darling. I remember having night sweats in winter, and opening the window. Clint would heave a long breath and exaggeratedly turn up the electric blanket on his side of the bed!

Namaste..........cj

Judi, that was great! I'm also enjoying reading the comments. I think we all have the same problem with our husbands. And I thought I was the only one. laurie @ Battling My Inner Critic

I love it when it's cold at night. I have the air conditioner on and also a fan, lol. Loved your centus. It was very hard though.

Dear Judie,
One good thing about this week's prompt, is that it shows how different climates affect us. We think differently about the seasons.

Your poem says so much about how Autumn is thought of in a hot climate. Fall is a time to be looked forward to, a cool relief after a long hot summer.

And your ditty isn't bad. It's singable! Yes I have sung it. It works. So you have succeeded very well with this challenge!

Congrats! Aren't you proud?

Don't put song-writing down. It's not that easy. And children's songs are actually very hard to write. I have tried to keep up with a meme for children's verse called 'Monday's Child'; but it is so hard to do. The best participant is Brenda Bryant ('Rinkly Rimes'). [Read whatever she writes. I think she has a post with us for this SC-72.]

Since you are a movie-buff, you may want to look at an old movie, Night and Day (1946) with Cary Grant as Cole Porter. It is not a perfect movie, but it is a wonderful display of Cole Porter's songs. I did not realise that he had written so much. All good stuff. It made me wish that my Grandfather, who was a musician, were still alive. I would have liked to have asked him what he thought of Cole Porter's songs.

Best wishes,
Anna

Well, you have done another great one, Judie! We have similar problems, you and I with temperatures, but mine is the opposite. As Autumn sets in, Rich will be monitoring the thermostat, waiting for me to crank up the heat! I shiver all winter, so when I sneak out of bed at night to adjust the temperature, it is to get more heat! But then we live in opposite climates, you and I. :)

Tammy said...

I enjoyed it and agree with you 100%! Some things just aren't worth the suffering!

Judie said...

Cher, the answer to your chills is FLANNEL!!! In the winter, I wear flannel pajama bottoms, because Rod needs the comforter to stay warm, and I don't! I used to wear socks as well, but I got over that. The best socks are heavy cotton knit. I'm sure you already know that, though. Stay warm, sister!! And I will stay COOL!!

hahahaha. I loved the poem, but I love that fact that you sneak to the air conditioner control. hahahahaha.

And yes, you can hang with me if you live in Utah. Because, yeah, that's where I am.

Also, I fed your fish. They looked hungry

Judie said...

D.D., my fish are always hungry!!!!

haha!!! Your fall song worked perfectly! I was singing it a few times :o)

And I am the opposite...as far as being icy cold at night! My hubby has the fan blowing at a torrential speed! (I also like when he has been in bed a while before me...like a hot water bottle! haha...then I put my frozen toes on him to warm up!) Yes, we live in southern Georgia...and I still am cold more often than not! My family likes to say "If mom is comfortable, everyone else is sweating!" I am the one that likes to sit in a hot car, especially after a doctor's appt, where it always seems like the air is on full blast :o)

Blessings & Aloha!
Thank you my friend for your lovely visit and sweet comment! So excited about the future grandbaby...but wish we lived nearer!

We had our first taste of autumn yesterday, fierce winds, a sharp drop in temperature, and the leaves falling everywhere like rain. T.S. Eliot said April is the cruelest month, but my vote goes to September, at least here in upstate NY, with summer behind us and six months of winter looming up ahead.

Angelia Sims said...

That is sooo perfect! Love your version.

And I know just how you feel about sticking to the sheets. I can't stand it. I have no idea what our electric bill has been this summer, but it was worth every penny. The 100's are over. YAY!!!

Oh gosh--how adorable!!! I didn't see the prompt, but now I'm tempted to write one!!! LOL
