August

The Rogue Speaks:

Here is my offering for Jenny's 55th Saturday Centus. Now I am off to celebrate my best friend's birthday. More on that later--I'm late as usual! Oh, and please stay for a while and listen to my music. It was written by one of my favorite composers. Do you know who it is?

The attic lay silent in the heat of an August sun. Beams of sunlight, shimmering with dust motes, fell across the glass of the old mirror. Maddy stood transfixed, her wide eyes staring back at her from the reflection in the mirror. The image she saw was that of the child she used to be.

Slowly, she turned and found her place in the little rocker. Sitting down with her baby doll held gently in her arms, she began to rock and sing. Then she became aware of her father, standing beside her.

"Hi, Maddy," he said. "What are you doing?"

I hope you have fun at your friend's birthday party! Now you know I have to turn up my volume ....sometimes I like to just sit in silence... I really enjoyed the vision on this post, it brought me right into your post...in such short words you conveyed so mcuh...now what is her father up to!

Now you know my imagine can run wild so bear with me...

I think she was remembering the attic was where her controlling father punished her. As an adult she remembered things that happened there and her father caught her at the moment she realized what was done to her. Creepy!

Ok now share with us what's really going on here!

Great use of the prompt Judie! You've got me wondering. ~Ames

The mood is exquisitely set here, and the music adds to the effect. I could see those specks of dust floating past the mirror like flecks in a snow globe. I was charmed until I read Ames's interpretation and went back to read the piece over again.

Now I am filled with foreboding.

Either way, it works. And I loved it, Judie.

Nice channeling of V.C. Andrews here!

Very nicely done. I too thought of the child in the mirror, but didn't write it!

I'm also left wanting more, Judie. The imagery is so intriguing and the music is a perfect match.
Be well. I hope you're partying hard right now.
(I'm still not sure about this prompt. Kudos for tackling it.)

I'd like to think that the attic was just her, revisiting her childhood belongings, and remembering. Nothing sinister comes to my mind, but that's just how I see it.

I have a bad feeling about this. Please continue it and tell me it ain't so!

You can relax, Sara! It's not what you're thinking. Hey! How about you quit unpacking, painting, etc., and just take a break to do a little writing! We miss your posts!!!!

the music makes the mood
i think she's daydreaming
about her mother that she
lost at an early age...
about longing to be a
ballerina...but that stopped
when she lost her mom...

i think you left this wide
open Judie...and i love it :D

That was so good. I often wonder about attics. We have never had one. Well, we have one, but not for storage. I can imagine the feeling tho.

Looks like Maddy went through the looking glass and returned to her childhood for real. Another interpretation (more fanciful) that I like is that the grown woman seeing her child reflection is really a child imagining herself to be a grown woman.

More, please! You've only just whetted our appetites with this one. I do hope you continue the story.

Weird. I wonder where my other post went?

I like the slightly 'off' direction you're going with this story. I know somethings wrong, but I can't quite put my finger on it!

Great writing Miss Judie!
