T is for TOOTH!!!

The Rogue Speaks:

Ish ooh cant read thish, iss vecause I ust goh vack fohm cee deniss!

Ahhhh!! That's better! It's now two hours later and the novocaine has finally worn off! I was eating dinner Friday night and one of my crowns popped off! This crown was VERY old, and worn. In fact, the dentist is amazed that it lasted as long as it has. It was put in by Rod's dad (Dr. McEwen), and he has been dead for almost 23 years! Now that was some excellent dental work, don't you think?

Rod's dad was nothing like Steve Martin in Little Shop of Horrors.

In fact, he and another dentist friend of his gave something really spectacular to the world of dentistry back in the '50's-- they perfected the high-speed drill! They were even written up in Life Magazine! AND they added that water feature to it so the tooth wouldn't heat up and explode in your mouth!!(I just added that part for a little humor. I have never heard of an exploding tooth.)

Dr. McEwen practiced reconstructive dentistry, and people came from all over the country to see him. One of his long-time patients was Susan Hayward! That beautiful smile of hers didn't come cheap, let me tell you!

My own dentist is Dr. David Haymore. Rod and I have been going to him since we moved here, and he's really a great guy. We're very picky about dentists, and wouldn't go to just anyone!

Would you believe me if I told you this is a photo of Dr. Haymore? Nah! I didn't think so.

In two weeks, I will be getting my new crown. In the photo at the beginning of my post you can see my options. It doesn't take a math whiz to figure out just which one I opted for. Have you SEEN the price of GOLD lately? No-brainer there!!

I don't really have any dental music to go with this post, but I did manage to find a hit from the fifties! Please check out the other offerings at Jenny's Alphabe-Thursday.

Loved this! And what timing. I just saw my dentist on Thursday of last week. Then an oral surgeon the next day. Neither one could figure out why I was having pain in what I thought was coming from my back molar, which also has a crown on it. So, Monday I saw my primary doctor. In the meantime, I'd been experiencing excruciating pain! I would compare it to labor pain..only in my entire left jaw! Yeee-Ouch! Long story, I have some weird thing that could last days, weeks or months, and then probably go away. I'm sure this is WAY more info than you ever cared to know about me! LOL. But I just thought ESP kind of thing. Hope your new crown lasts another 23+ years!

I have a few crowns, but none of them gold. Are you going to have some jewelry made out of the gold crown?

Judie said...

Becky, you could have temporomandibular joint syndrome. Rod's dad used to see that in his practice. It is painful, but it can be treated.

Esther Joy, I had another gold crown replaced with porcelain last year. Jewelry? No! I plan to sell them to the gold mavens! They're everywhere these days.

Oh mine, that is a really great dental work, 23 years! I'm glad you feel better after though!

What an impressive legacy...or is that, "toothacy??!"

You are an amazing fountain of info and I love the connections you have! That is so cool about Rod's dad and Dr. McEwen. We've really gotten "connected" with those in the medical/dental fields...Our older daughter is a dentist, her hubby is a dermatologist, his brother is a dentist-who is married to a pediatrician, our son in law's uncle is a dentist, our second daughter will be a dentist next May and her boyfriend is a dentist! haha (I became a dental hygienist after our oldest decided to go into the dental field.) Our youngest does not plan on going into the dental field. :o)
My hubby says that as much as I brush and floss, I should have a mouth that is restoration-free. *sigh* Actually, I should be royalty, considering all the crowns I have in my mouth!

Love to visit you, as always!
Blessings & Aloha!

Dental work is never fun but at least you have a dentist you can trust. Very important, I think.

Just wanted to let you know that our older daughter called me on her way home from work and I read your post to her over the phone! She thought that was so awesome too :o)
Will need to tell our other daughter about your post too :0)

Blessings & Aloha!

We love our dentist too. JDaniel went to see him for the first time last month. He was great with our three year old.

Oh I don't even want to think about this...I have so many visits behind me...and probably a few too many more ahead! I brush and floss all the time too! I just love Steve Martin he's so silly and in his dark hair...he was cute...I just watched him in Father of The Bride again the other night, yes for the a million and something times I know! Great TP! Judie!

That is some very good dental work! Hope the next one lasts as long.

I had a horrible dental experience recently! Too horrid to write about! But I love your post! A good dentist is your BFF! Rod's dad was really an excellent DDS! Terrific post! Anne

You might want to think about your crown choice as an investment, lol.
I once interviewed a client that had a diamond implanted in his front tooth. I would have been afraid to eat or walk down the street!

Well, I tried to comment once and got that blasted sign-in dilemma again! Stinkin blogger crap anyway!! OK, over my menopausal blowup:) Now if I could just remember what I said.... Must have been something about hating dental work. Note I didn't say I hate dentists...

And I miss hearing those soft melodies so I have to add them once in awhile. Glad you do to. I need to get you on my sidebar on the soon to be only blog. You're in my reader but I don't get there often enough. Anyway, good luck with the toothy stuff and hopefully I'll see you on JAKE:) xoxo

"You'll be a dennnnnnntist!" Love Little Shop of Horrors! We don't have a dentist in Romania ... Here's hoping our teeth woes hold out until we're back in the States!

Even if price wasn't an object, I think I would prefer the natural-colored crown. Somehow the gold one is too much of an advertisement that I'm not quite perfect. Why remove all doubt?

Hi again Judie!

Many thanks for yr query to my Lola Lifeline. My P.A. has carefully filed it for the next edition (though she's off now for a while so not sure when she'll get around to posting it - can't get the staff these days!!)

XOXO Lola:)

You always make me giggle, Judie! If there was a dentist who looked like John Whatshisname, I would travel to go to him!

I never knew they made gold crowns before all the rappers had them. I've made it 54 years with all my teeth...but I'm sure that will change. :)

How cool is that to have had a father-in-law who was a famous dentist? I think it's spectacular! At least you know that he's reliable and he did great dental work!

I've been looking for a good dentist in Tokyo for a while now and I finally found one that has wonderful bedside manners as well as great dentist work. :)

Ooh gold covered crown. I just saw this featured in the news that in Japan people were selling them away as the price of gold has risen tremendously. Thanks for visiting my bloh.

That certainly is a long time, more than 23 years. You deserve a new crown, but then which one are you going to choose?
Great T word.

The dentist is NOT my favorite place to go...might help if my dentist looked like John Stamos!

I've got to go back in a couple weeks for a crown (have a temporary now). Good luck with yours!

Sarah said...

On the other hand, it will be good investment if you put in a gold crown. Nobody can take it from you, and the price keeps going up! It will be difficult for your kids to get that inheritance though..

It is so important to like...and trust your dentist. Rich and I believe that we have paid off our dentist's building in the five years we have been going to him. But it's so worth it, right?

JJ said...

Judie: I hate going to the dentist. Unless my crown falls out, the next dentist I see will be Rod's dad.

Jenny said...

I can picture you now wearing a tasteful, yet elegant, gold tooth pendant! ha!

Glad your novocaine has worn off but you did sound awfully cute talking like that!

Thanks for a cute post!

My condolences that he isn't actually your dentist!

Thanks for linking Judie. You are terrific.

A+

Rod and I go to the dentist twice a year. We are firm believers in maintaining good dental health, primarily because it can protect against certain types of heart disease, and other illnesses as well. My mother died of heart disease that was directly related to periodontal disease. Infective endocarditis is often the result of poor dentition. Toxic shock (blood poisoning) is another disease that can be directly related to poor dental health. An abcess in a tooth can spread to the surrounding bone, and can even travel to the brain.

Ummm, when your dad-in-law was perfecting the drill, couldn't he have made it SILENT along with the high speed and the water? ;D

I'm assuming those little ones on your side bar are your grands -- so very cute!

Judie said...

I wish he could have made one that played songs of the Fleetwoods!

Yeow! I have four crowns, and the two back ones are gold - my nest egg at this rate!

Judie, I couldn't help but notice your grand daughter's trip to holland. My dad came off a boat at age 12 from Holland. I hope to visit one day soon. The white crown will be a little less showy. Nice and demure. Thank you for your wonderful compliment. It means a lot.

When I saw Russian speaking people for the first time at the Red Sea in Egypt (because now they are not all Russians anymore, but Ukrainians and whatever) my eyes popped out when I discovered that lots of them had GOLDEN crowns on their front teeth and therefore a smile like the guy in a James Bond movie ! It looked awful but they were very proud. Imagine somebody smiling at you the mouth full of golden teeth !
Fortunately I met a Russian journalist (with white teeth) who explained to me that it was a sign of being wealthy ! I would prefer to invest my money in a second house but certainly not in golden teeth, (smile !)

Ohbekaybe!(Bill Cosby)

I am not fond of going to the dentist, low tolerance for pain, so I go to a Prostodontist. I am his very first patient. My chart number is 0001. I trust him and I have had a ton of work done by him and a ton more to do before my former employer decides to drop my dental plan. Then I'll probably start collecting coke and beer cans from the side of the road for money to pay for the work because I will do everything possible to keep my real teeth in my head!
Loved your post Judie dear!~Ames

One of my least favorite things in life is visiting a dentist. Lucky I have accommodating teeth. Just a few cavities over the decades and four impacted molars removed when in my 20s.

Judie,

I vote for the gold tooth. If things get really bad you can always sell it!

As usual, your story-telling skills have brought us another wonderful excursion into your world.

Thanks, and as always,

Namaste...........cj

Wow! That's really interesting about your father-in-law. I will think of him every time I see my dentist and mentally thank him. Steve Martin was hilarious, and scary, in Little Shop of Horrors. I love his acting and his humor. Glad the novocaine has worn off!

You father-in-law sounds like he was an amazing dentist! Wow! I hope your new crown lasts half as long. Even that would be spectacular!

I'm with you when it comes to being picky about dentists. I went to one guy for most of my adult life and he's had the nerve to retire!

bluzdude said...

Obviously, you have to go for the gold tooth. And while he's in there, you should check into getting a whole diamond-studded gold front grill.
