E is for EXECRABLE

The Rogue Speaks:

This was supposed to be my "D" post until I changed horses in mid-stream.

So for Jenny's Alphabe-Thursday this week, I am letting you know exactly how I feel about the dumbing down of America by reality t.v. shows. In my last week's post, I mentioned "Lady Hoggers," those low-class skanks who chase hogs through the woods while wearing tight shirts and hoop earrings. In a recent episode, these two chase a wild boar who is running rampant through an trailer park. Who in God's name came up with the idea for this show? And just who watches it???

A Star is Born!

And speaking of hogs, the sight of men covered head to toe with tats, wearing greasy bandanas on their heads like throw-backs to the Woodstock age, and sporting those muscle shirts, and working on their motorcycles, are starting to give the open road, wind blowing through your hair while bucolic scenery speeds by, a bad name. The name Jesse James comes to mind, since he was part of that show. What a creep! He had a pretty good thing going with Sandra Bullock, but he had to screw it up. Now he says he misses his pals on the tasteless bike show, and he's sorry he left. I think he is just sorry, period, and so is that show!

Be Still My Heart!

Just who are those Kardashians anyway? Their only claim to fame is that their father defended O.J. Simpson and GOT HIM OFF!!! Rod was curious about that show, which I have NEVER seen, and after five minutes he went back to the history channel.

Who ARE These People Anyway???

I grew up in Atlanta, was married there and had children there. I was an Atlanta housewife, a REAL one. I did watch this show for about 10 minutes once, and realized that these were definitely not the genteel southern women I used to know when I lived there. These are women are obsessed with themselves and conspicuous consumption. I was totally disgusted.

White Trash

Then there's Gene Simmons and his Family Jewels. WHO CARES?????

The Dog--Best Man or Maid of Honor??

Joan and Melissa? Puleeze! Give me a break! Enough said.

Only the dumbest of the dumb finds anything of social value in "World's Dumbest Criminals."

As for those court shows, like "Divorce Court," ditto.

"Tori and Dean" are on my list, as is "Bait Car."

So, tell me--just what t.v. shows do you think belongs on this list? I have purposely left some off the list, and want to see what YOU come up with!

I have to add that MTV one about teenagers getting pregnant. I've never watched it and don't know the actual name, and I'm kind of proud of that fact. =>

My all time favorite is this show about a guy who catches "river monsters". It's meant to be serious but it's actually hilarious. He is wrestling with this man eating fish in some river somewhere and there are little kids just downstream from him playing in the water..what a poser!

It's gotten to the point where I watch the History channel and some of the food channel and pretty much nothing else. Even the news is stupid...I know I sound like a crabby old woman, but give me a break! We aren't all idiots out here in TV land!

I don't watch TV - your post explains why very nicely. Well, I do watch documentaries, history, NOVA and 4-5 star rated movies on TV so I wasn't quite accurate. The rest terrifies me.

Tracy said...

well said I really dislike reality TV made by people about people who have way toooooo much money and no class
You dont see a reality show about the down and outs trying to find food

I could have written a similar post on the tv here in the UK.

Judie said...

Stacia, I haven't watched MTV in about 25 years or more. Where are the censors??????

Rocky Mountain Woman: Ah, yes! River Monsters!! He catches them, then throws them back so they can swim over and eat the little children playing in the water!!

Mari, I must admit I am addicted to HGTV, and particularly House Hunters. We have Netflix instant viewing, and see a lot of really good movies.

Tracy, those are actually documentaries, and occasionally there is a good segment on 60 Minutes or MSN about just that subject. Unfortunately, the people who SHOULD be seeing it are NOT.

jbf, that doesn't surprise me. This seems to be a universal trend.

Reality crap on tv is E.V.I.L! And I put the Bachelor and that stupd one with people falling, rolling, flying off some big colored balls into water in that catagory. And the idiot court stuff and...ok, I knew I shouldn't have started ranting..your fault:) Not worth my time. I honestly didn't know most of who you shared, other than hearing them on the news or something. Oh and the first picture up there? You can see why the guys like it, silicone is forever:)

Ranting Excellence at it's best.....

Judie, I don't watch any of these. I'm just not interested. But I did enjoy reading your rant. :))

I don't watch much TV, and didn't even know these shows exist. If I heard that it is a reality show, I stay away even further...

Well it's all nothing to me...I don't watch any reality tv at all...one of my dearest friends does and that is all she watches...so we never ever talk about television...but we go to movies! Great source of info though Judie and the photos just rock right off the page!

Hello.
I hear you about the sad state of TV these days. Our cable bill keeps going up every month or two & all I'm paying for is this reality stuff that sucks! When I do watch, I like Turner Classic Movies, First 48, National Geographic & sports.
Thanks for sharing & visiting. I appreciate the comment.

Jakie, I take full responsibility for your rant! And I agree with you TOTALLY about those shows that require people to balance steak knives on their eyeballs while whitewater rafting down the Colorado on a boogy board. How stupid is that???? Oh, and don't forget the show where some fool has to pull all the kleenex out of the box within 15 seconds!

Cindy Adkins said...

Oh wow, I don't watch t.v.--so, I don't know! Can you believe it? My kids don't watch it either--I guess we're too busy...how funny! I hope you're enjoying the holidays, Judie!!!

EG WOW, and Mumsy, thank you for NOT contributing to the dumbing down of America, or any other country, for that matter!! xoxo

Andy, some Americans wonder why this country is reverting back to the dark ages. Just watch reality t.v. if you want to know!! Thanks so much for your comment. Your post was wonderful!!!

I haven't heard of some of these. We don't have cable. I do like the singing shows!

All reality shows are a waste of time in my opinion. I watch Bones, HGTV House Hunters International, News etc. I can't understand how anyone would think they are entertaining.~Ames

Oh, I can think of a bunch, but one of my favorite shows to hate is Dancing with the Stars...REALLY? Dancing? where? and stars? I'm not seeing any twinkle twinkle. Loved loved loved this post!!

Pondside said...

Sorry, I can't help - there's little I watch in real time - PVR Masterpiece Theatre, a few detective shows and the odd old movie. I can't stand the reality shows or the half hour sit coms.

I couldn't agree more. In fact, I was just asking myself yesterday "who are the Kardashians" and, as you say, "who cares"? I just hope this stuff isn't what aliens discover first about our society!

Leovi said...

Yes, in Spain we are invaded by the TV - garbage, apparently is the most profitable economically, not culturally.

Steph said...

Okay! I totally had trouble getting past the music.... I'm so reveling in the eighties moment. Anyway, One nice thing about living overseas is missing out on all these shows (though it can be a shock and embarrassment when you visit home). I love the comment about aliens. Fun, evidently too true post.

Diane said...

I could not agree more! Trashy reality t.v. is out of control. This is the first I've heard of the Lady Hoggers. There are no words.

There are so many...Jersey Shore and Teen Mom are just a couple that come to mind!

Jules said...

I turned the TV off about three years ago and have only turned it on if something really amazing comes on....that would be about 4 times!!!!!

Francisca said...

Well, this was an interesting rant, Judie! And the comments too. Why am I not surprised that bloggers eschew the crap. I stopped watching TV after I used to watch the 1976 cult show Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman before going to bed after a day of studying at university. Today we own a TV, but I don't even know how to turn it on. (Nohey uses the screen to watch movies.) Haven't heard of a single one of the shows you mention, and I saw the first YouTube video of American Idol in season 7 I think it was (a friend pointed me to it). I do remember being incensed that Dallas was playing in China in the 90s... can you think of a worse program to show the American way of life? (I watched that for 20 minutes once and nearly gagged.) So I am a cultural moron when it comes to mainstream media. That's okay by me. My time is like a treasure box and there is no room for garbage.

Francisca said...

* Honey, not Nohey... LOL!

Judie, I haven't watched TV or owned a TV in over 30 years. I have no idea who any of these people are, and I'm glad of it. I'm sure I'm not missing out on anything.

Hi Judie!

Superb post – so apt!Reality TV everywhere is dreadful!

Have a great week & look forward to *seeing* you again soon!

Gattina said...

Can't really comment on you post because I don't know these shows and apparently I haven't missed anything. Totoos may look nice when you are 20 but at 70 they look rather wrinkled, and that's what people don't about when they are young. I hate tatoos !

Judie said...

Gattina, my sweet daughter-in-law got a tat when she was in her early twenties. It was two geckos chasing each other around her navel. 2 1/2 years ago she gave birth to twins. I haven't seen that tat lately, but I imagine it looks like two old wrinkly gators!!

My name is Riet said...

I don't think I know these shows and as it seems I didn
t miss much.

Jo said...

well, here i am, the self admitted reality show junkie ... but i guess it depends on the type of reality show you watch ... anything that begins with "the real housewives" is nothing more than a bunch of trashy $%E$^$ no matter how much money they have... but i do love watching Project Runway, The Amazing Race, So You Think You Can
Dance and Work of Art ...but only because i love the arts, and creating ... but that other crap ... giving fame to ill mannered people .... i dont watch that crap at all!

Judie said...

Jo, my niece attended Parsons, and they are responsible for Project Runway. She left Parsons because of that show. The pressure of putting it together was so great that she lost weight(something she could not afford to do), lost sleep, and stayed stressed out so much that she just couldn't take it any more.

Al Penwasser said...

I'm with you completely!!
Although I have to admit I'm intrigued over the thought of Kardashian's father getting OJ off. THAT image is probably not safe for work!
I'm a man, so I have to admit it took me a couple seconds to notice the dead boar.
Like him, I guess I'm a pig.
And therein lies the appeal of "Lady Hoggers."

Splendid Little Stars said...

Oh well. Unfortunately, I won't come up with any because I basically don't watch TV. I see I'm missing nothing! But I'm going to read through the comments just for fun!

Splendid Little Stars said...

So I read through the comments and now must admit that I watch HGTV sometimes. This is mostly on an exercise machine at the gym.
We bloggers must be a smart lot! We're too busy reading and writing blogs to mess with all that gar-bage!

Theresa Plas said...

But what does "execrable" mean...? gotta look it up:)

Judie said...

Yeah, o.k., Al. I really screwed up with that remark. Oops! What's wrong with me, anyway!!

Thanks for stopping by and supporting my rant. As the political season progresses, I can promise you more rants, especially since I can see a strong parallel between really bad reality t.v. and political campaigns.

Barbara F. said...

Oh Judie, this post made me smile. I must confess, I watch Real Housewives and the Kardashians.......it is like watching a train wreck but I can't stop looking! I do get a fair amount of amusement from the antics and fighting, I would never want to be them or even be friends with them. Sister Wives is fascinating to me. The people with 19 kids or Kate + 8, no thank you. Visiting from Jenny's blog. xo

BlackLOG said...

Does the lady protest too much? you appear to know way to much detail about these programs than is healthy....

Being in the UK we don’t even get your original crap reality TV anymore. No we now get copy cat crap British reality TV (which is possibly even worse)– thanks guys another great US export.....

The only thing in the defence of these shows is that it keeps the sort of people portrayed on the program off of the streets while they watch their mentors....now if we had them being shown 24 hours a day it might keep the wannabes out of action permanently....

Sarah said...

I don't watch any of those "shows" because I totally agree with you. There's no quality shows anymore since the big corporations took over the network.

Judie said...

Sarah, I can only Tango so much. I think you know what I mean by this. As for the big corporations, the "Biggest Loser"(no pun intended) is Fox, followed by A&E,which I used to think stood for Arts and Entertainment, not Art and Excrement. Unfortunately, the History Channel is not much better when it touts shows about the Bible and history at the same time, or shows about prognostigators who see into the future and predict the end of the world.

Jenny said...

I have to admit I haven't watched a single one of these shows.

Although I am willing to admit I am addicted to pawn stars and American Pickers, though.

This was an excellent post and commentary Judie.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this.

A+

Exacrable=extremely bad or unpleasant! I learned something else....I agree. And oh Ms. Jenny...I like American Pickers too :o) I like to watch food challenge shows, HGTV shows, shows like Person of Interest, Blue Blood, Hawaii 5-O, and old movies...and also during this time of year, even if the Hallmark and Fa-la-la-la lifetime Christmas shows have similar story lines...I love to watch them with their happy endings :o)

Blessings & Aloha!
